The nucleotide sequence of the region coding for the F1-ATPase of Vibrio alginolyticus was determined. A nucleotide sequence of 1329 base pairs was found which is organized into three sequentially transcribed units. The N-terminal portion of the mRNA coding for the alpha subunit, the middle coding for the beta subunit and the C-terminal portion of the mRNA coding for the gamma subunit can all be described by open reading frames. The 16 amino acid sequences of the F1-ATPase alpha subunit (subunit a) and the F1-ATPase beta subunit (subunit b) were compared to those of other microorganisms. Within these two groups of alpha subunits the F1-ATPase from Vibrio alginolyticus differed significantly from the alpha subunits of other microorganisms. Within the group of beta subunits the amino acid sequence of Vibrio alginolyticus differs from those of all other microorganisms in which the beta subunit has been sequenced. The amino acid sequence of the F1-ATPase gamma subunit is identical with those of the alpha and beta subunits. The F1-ATPase (subunit c) from Vibrio alginolyticus has the same amino acid sequence as the b subunit and appears to be identical to the delta subunit of yeast and Escherichia coli.Caruso (surname)
